Channel Island Marine Life  by Sue Daly

Anemones & corals

Anemones and corals all belong to the group called Cnidaria.  Initially they seem to have little in common with each other but all are ‘flower-like’ animals that have tentacles to catch their food and stinging cells called cnida, hence their name.  Although they have no proper organs or circulatory system they do have a simple nervous system and so are considered to be higher up the evolutionary scale than sponges.
